Seven Star Praying Mantis was created by a Shaolin Monk named Wang Lang. He watched a Mantis defeat a larger insect while mediating one. Wang Lang captured this Mantis and attempted to attack the mantis with a straw in a cage. The mantis trapped the straw , blocked and deflected the straw. He then precede to create his Praying Mantis System by adding the ape footwork for strong stances and incorporating 17 other styles to round out his system.

Wang liked to call the system:Seven Star Praying Mantis ( Chi Xing Tang Lang ) because he hoped that followers would become as many as those who could see the Ursa Major constellation. Seven Star Praying Mantis was considered one of the most deadliest systems from Shandong Province. The system was very poplar throughout the Ching Dynasty.
